Local sources checked October 19, 2026.
Ventura Building and Safety maintains a historical archive of permits and plans. If the fireplace changed before you owned the home, ask what records are available for the address and compare them with the appliance now present.
City of Ventura: Building and Safety ↗Write down the unanswered question: when an insert was added, whether venting changed, or which earlier repair a document describes. Bring that question to the inspection. A past approval is useful context; it does not describe today’s deposits or concealed condition.
What have you noticed at the property?
- A damp patch around a chimney after wind-driven rain
- Questions about a fireplace installation documented in an older permit
- An unused fireplace being considered for the cooler season

Where can I look for an older Ventura fireplace permit or plan?
Start with the City Building and Safety historical archive. Ask about records for the property address; do not assume every past alteration will have a retrievable file.
City of Ventura: Building and Safety ↗Is a Ventura County agricultural burn day a fireplace-use notice?
The APCD describes its burn-day system as part of agricultural open burning. Use its separate residential smoke guidance instead of treating that status as permission for a household fireplace.
