How to separate residential fireplace alerts, agricultural burning and regional smoke guidance from Santa Barbara to Orange County.

The key question is the authority for the property. Santa Barbara County, Ventura County and the South Coast Air Basin have different programs; one county's alert or agricultural burn status should not be treated as a statewide fireplace rule.

01

South Coast AQMD: use the current alert

South Coast AQMD publishes mandatory residential No-Burn alerts and explains the applicable geography, devices and exemptions. Check the current alert for the date and property before using a wood-burning fireplace.

The program page describes winter fine-particle restrictions. Current advisories are the authority for an actual day; do not rely on an old article or assume the absence of a winter label establishes permission.

02

Santa Barbara County: use county guidance

Santa Barbara County APCD publishes its own cleaner-fireplace guidance, including smoke and nuisance considerations. Keep that county context separate from South Coast AQMD program language.

A fireplace that sends smoke toward neighboring properties deserves attention. Review current county advice, appliance guidance and any relevant fire restriction before use.

03

Ventura County: distinguish the type of burning

Ventura County APCD distinguishes agricultural open burning from residential fireplace concerns. Its smoke guidance advises avoiding a wood-burning fireplace when that would add particles during a smoke event.

An agricultural burn status is not a decision about the safety or condition of an individual fireplace. Use the district guidance and the appropriate fire authority for the actual activity.

04

Make a repeatable household check

Before each wood fire, verify the applicable advisory and use only the fuel approved for the appliance. Stop use if smoke enters the room or if operation changes.

A maintenance visit assesses the system. It cannot guarantee the air-quality status of a future date or certify an exemption from a local rule.

  • Confirm the air district and property jurisdiction.
  • Read the current residential advisory and any applicable exemption.
  • Keep agricultural, outdoor recreational and indoor fireplace categories separate.
  • Check air-quality guidance again when smoke conditions change.

Common questions

Clear answers for the season.

Is Check Before You Burn a statewide program?

No. South Coast AQMD explains a specific program and geography. Santa Barbara and Ventura County have their own district resources.

Does an agricultural burn day mean I can use my fireplace?

No. The activity and responsible authority differ. Check the guidance that applies to the residential appliance and address.

Can an inspection override a No-Burn alert?

No. System condition and legal permission to burn are different questions.
